If you’ve ever gotten into a discussion or even read about abortion, you’ve likely encountered comments about anti-abortion protesters adopting the babies they believe they’re saving. An offhand remark about abortion on an adoption group resulted in one woman proudly stating that she and her husband stand in front of their local “abortion clinic” with the sign “WE WANT TO ADOPT YOUR BABY. ALL EXPENSES PAID.”
When I first read that, my mind went blank. Then I thought, Wow.
Wow, that’s just wrong.
Because what she and her husband are essentially saying is, “WE WANT TO BUY YOUR BABY.”
If the sign read “We want to adopt your baby” and ended there, somehow that would be acceptable, though presumptuous. A woman could walk up and say, “My baby has trisomy 18. Would you like to adopt a baby who will likely die within 30 days of his birth?”. I wonder what the response would be. (But that’s another post…)
Adoptive parents have to fight the presumption that adoption amounts to buying babies. I didn’t purchase my child. I paid fees to attorneys and social workers for their services. I doubt that this woman and her husband are the only people in the country with signs like that. The protests are covered by local news, or even Time and Newsweek, and the signs get in the photo. Now people can point to the signs and say, “See?”. It perpetuates a harmful myth.
Furthermore, adoptive parents paying expectant mother expenses aren’t legal in all states. Do the people with signs such as these necessarily know that? If they do know it, and hold the signs up, that adds a whole new level of wrong. Even if expenses are allowed, I find it insulting that the couple presumes money is the only barrier between this woman and parenting her child.
I think everyone can agree that no one wants more abortions. I don’t think this sign is the way to accomplish that goal.
What does it matter what the sign says if it were to save a childs life. I would not be alive today if abortion was legal in 1968
Great post! I hate abortion. I wish there were no abortion at all. I hate the majority of the signs at anti-abortion rallys, and most of the bumper stickers I see. Our lives are complicated and most of our issues cannot fit onto a picket sign. When I drive down the rode and there are pictures of aborted babies on posters and I have to explain those to my young, innocent children I get VERY ANGRY!
I also don’t agree with a lot of the pro-choice propaganda. I cringe at the thought of a baby only being a baby if it is wanted.
Adoption isn’t an “easy fix” to end abortion. If abortion had an “easy fix” we would have done it by now.
