Today is Thanksgiving in the US, so I thought I’d do the traditional “What I’m Thankful For” post. However, I’m going to put an adoption spin on it.
- I am thankful for my son, obviously. Moreover, I’m thankful because he is musical, already seems to have a propensity for math, and is just plain wonderful.
- I am thankful for my husband. Some spouses must be convinced to adopt. Mine chose me knowing that it meant never having biological children. As a bonus, he can cook.
- I am thankful for my son’s birthmother. Not only did she make us all family, if genetics play any role in cognitive behavior, she has given my son her math smarts. As someone who chose her major in college specifically to avoid math, I really appreciate that. I’m also thankful that she sang to him while he was in her womb. I am musical, and I think that having two musical moms is great for Jack!
- I am thankful for my son’s birthmother’s mother. This is hard to write, as Tanya* and I do not get along at all. However, after some major events of this past year, I do know that, if anything happens to S, I can contact Tanya for a connection to Jack’s birth family.
- I am thankful for all the friends I’ve made because of our connections to adoption.
- I am thankful to have this blog to share my thoughts about adoption and racial issues. So, I’m thankful for Brandy and Jenna who hired me, and for all of you who are reading. I’m also thankful for my co-bloggers. I actually read all the posts, and they rarely fail to give me something to think about. (I’d love it if next year, I could write how thankful I am that there are so many comments on the blog posts!)
- I am thankful that my husband found a job after being out of work for almost a year. How does this relate to adoption? Now that he’s working, we can look forward to planning another adoption – the addition of Jack’s little sister will probably be a big topic for the next one to two years.

Thank you all for reading. I wish you all a very happy day, even if you do not spend it watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and eating some version of turkey.
Happy Thanksgiving!
